Yoga on the River studio was founded in 1980 by Susan Osman.

Susan began practicing yoga while visiting her in-laws in India. Her mother-in-law was a part-time yoga instructor. They would practice together before the family woke for the day. At the time there wasn’t much yoga in the United States, but Susan was determined to expand her knowledge and yoga practice. In 1977 Susan made the journey to California to take her yoga instructor training. After she did her training she would hold small yoga classes in her home, at local parks in the summer or private classes in clients’ homes. A few years passed and she had a large following. The following was so large she would have to turn people away from her small in-house classes. People would arrive and wait outside her home for hours! Finally, she decided to open a studio, and Yoga on the River was born.
The studio was overwhelmingly successful as she was after all the first yoga studio in the Pittsburgh area. In 1985 she began to take advanced yoga training in order to teach yoga instructors. She became the first yoga instructor teacher teaching in the Pittsburgh area.
I was one of Susan’s first yoga instructor students. Later I became the lead instructor and assisted her in training new students. Eventually, I completed my training to become a yoga instructor teacher.

Sadly in 2017, Susan suffered a stroke and was paralyzed on her left side. Personally, I was so sad for her and couldn’t imagine the studio without her presence daily. But one day she said to me, “Oh dear, don’t you worry about me. It is my time to retire.” I was in total shock. What would happen to Yoga on the River? It was my home. What would I do without my home? She then said to me, “Silly girl, you have been running the studio for years now.” She told me how she was planning to retire and was working to transfer ownership of the studio to me.
That is how I became the owner of Yoga on the River. The studio is still thriving and growing to this day. Susan still comes to visit the studio and will instruct our twice-monthly chair yoga classes.
